The Three Railway Engines Rev. W. Awdry First edition 7th impression
This is a very early edition of The Three Railway Engines, the very first book in the Railway Series by the Rev. This book contains the original illustrations by William Middleton, which were altered by C. Reginald Dalby when he took over as illustrator in 1948. This was the only time Middleton was an illustrator in the Railway Series. The back page of the book carries an advert for the next three books in the series, so this copy is most likely an impression from 1947-48. The book is dated using the use of the term "fat director" which is present on pages 40, 42, 52, 54, 56 and 60; in the 1947 edition and after he was renamed famously The Fat Controller.
The book is in (very) good condition, given its age. The binding is slightly slack but still relatively tight, There are no missing pages and all of the pages are still attached to the original binding. There are two slight tears and a little rubbing to the dust jacket which still has the price attached. There is a booksellers stamp inside the front cover but no other annotations. All in all, this is a very nice example of this rare and collectable book.
